The Ella V. Bowering Collection
Greetings from China! In out of the way corners of this ancient land, I have gathered many wonderful things about which you will hear later. - J. P. Lanie
When J. P. Lanie sent off a hand colored picture postcard of Chinese shops with the above message in 1903 from China to the United States, he had no way of knowing it would be treasured for so many years. Or that it would one day be a favorite in a collection of wonderful things that began with a few small items - primarily German Christmas tree ornaments, toys and a few travel souvenirs - given to a child named Ella. Over the years Ella gathered many more things. When she was no longer able to travel her daughters - Dorothy Dugas Robinson and Judith Bowering Funkhouser - added to the collection for her. The items in the collection have come from many sources. At one time such items would have been labeled “curios”.
